The Meaning Behind the Name
47° North holds a special place in my heart. Many special places, actually. Ever since I was a kid, I enjoyed traveling to the areas around the Great Lakes. Day trips along the North Shore or family vacations to the U.P., up North was always home.
After graduating high school, my coming-of-age trip wasn’t backpacking through Europe; it was a two-week road trip to Washington State, a place that has always called to me. But, as college and life happen, I lost touch with the area for several years.
I was a Junior in high school when my Commercial Arts class toured artist’s studios around the Twin Cities. Many of the artists were designers who worked independently in their own space and on their own schedules - this was incredibly appealing to me. At that moment I realized a career in graphic design could provide the personal freedom I knew I needed.
I’ve always had the drive to start my own business, to hone my skills, foster creativity and build a name from the ground up. I have had a few starts and stops as an entrepreneur, but hadn't found the right fit. That is, until Fourty7th Parallel. The past 15 years I’ve spent in the print and signage industry combined with the last two years attending school for entrepreneurship solidified for me the truth that my “passion” was where I had always been: print and design.
As I have grown with my family, we have made our return to the North. We’ve backpacked the Sawtooth Mountains, camped Madeline Island, and had several adventures in Michigan’s U.P., all the places I find my inspiration. And someday, my home-away-from-home will become my everyday home.
47° North is my “why” and Fourty7th Parallel is my daily reminder to keep up the drive, overcome the obstacles, and work through the fear. I started Fourty7th Parallel Print & Design Co. to finally grant myself the freedom to travel and move as my heart desires. I know I still have a long way to go to and a lot of work to do, but the journey has begun.
